Not only does it boast beautifully sculpted bodywork, its interior is just as interesting to the eyes. Of course, Mazda has shown us that its attention to detail is more than skin-deep, with thoughtful ergonomics and engaging driving dynamics. Compared with its predominantly dull competitors, the CX-5 is delightfully athletic and equally refined. While the standard four-cylinder engine lacks the punch of the available turbo-four, both pair with a highly proficient automatic transmission and are more fuel efficient than their EPA ratings suggest. Despite a smaller cargo area than its key competitors, the 2021 CX-5 shines brighter than all its classmates and even some more-expensive alternatives, making it a shoo-in for our 2021 10Best list as well as an Editors' Choice New for 2021?For 2021, the most notable upgrade made to the CX-5 is its new infotainment system. A screen now sits atop the dashboard, replacing a smaller display. The updated system features the new Mazda Connect interface, Mazda Connected Services a Wi-Fi hotspot and access to remote vehicle functions through a smartphone app, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The lineup also introduces a new Carbon Edition, which has unique Polymetal Gray paint and red upholstery. The top-of-the-line Signature trim adds a higher-definition 360-degree camera, a driver-attention alert, and rear automated emergency and Which One to BuyWith the addition of the CX-5 Carbon Edition, it's now possible to get the 250-hp turbocharged engine without paying for either of the top two trim levels. The front-drive version starts at just under $30,000, but those who want all-wheel drive can add it for $1400. Not only does the Carbon Edition have all the same features as the Touring model with the Preferred SV package Bose stereo, a power-adjustable passenger seat, power liftgate, sunroof, and more, it also has distinct exterior and interior treatments. The former includes black 19-inch wheels and a black metallic grille design; the latter includes red leather seats with red stitching and black accents on the instrument and door Transmission, and PerformanceThe CX-5's standard 187-hp four-cylinder engine has great throttle response when pulling away from stoplights or hustling around town, so it feels quicker than it actually is. It's at higher speeds, such as when trying to pass or merge onto the freeway, that it feels underpowered. The 250-hp turbocharged version we tested provided much quicker acceleration. Both engines pair with a snappy six-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. You don't need to drive the CX-5 hard to enjoy it or to appreciate its excellence. Sure, its precise steering and composed cornering make for one helluva Sunday cruise. But it also soaks up rough roads without commotion and has the ride quality of crossovers that cost twice as much. This harmonious interplay of dynamics is unrivaled by its competitors. Pavement imperfections are isolated, road noise is minimal, and the damping is neither stiff nor floaty. At the same time, the Mazda comes alive on curvy roads. The electrically assisted steering provides satisfying responses. The Signature model we tested had a reassuring brake-pedal feel that operated without delay and without being too touchy when you apply the Economy and Real-World MPGThe CX-5 has average EPA estimates—25 mpg city and 31 mpg highway for front-wheel drive, nonturbo models—compared with rivals that have similar power. However, in our testing, the Mazda was the only one to exceed its EPA highway rating. The all-wheel-drive, non-turbocharged version earned 32 mpg, which matched the Honda CR-V we tested. The front-drive, non-turbo CX-5 improved on that performance by 1 mpg. We also tested a CX-5 with the more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder and standard all-wheel drive; it earned 30 mpg on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route, which was 3 mpg higher than its EPA rating. Interior, Comfort, and CargoWake up inside the top-tier CX-5 models and you might think you've been abducted by kidnappers driving an Audi or a Mercedes. First-rate materials and a fabulous layout make it feel especially upscale. The floor-hinged accelerator pedal feels better than the more common version that is suspended above the floor, the well-crafted steering wheel is directly in front of the driver and not offset at a slight angle, and all of the front-seat armrests are at the same height for optimal comfort. Sacrifices come in small packages in this case, the CX-5 held just nine carry-on suitcases behind its rear seats in our testing. The storage bay does benefit from a completely flat load floor. There are also several nooks and crannies in the cabin to store smartphones and other small items. For instance, the center console has a deep tray at the front and a useful bin with a removable and ConnectivityEvery model now boasts a infotainment system, which replaces the old display. The new interface is still manipulated through a rotary controller and volume knob on the center console as well as voice commands and buttons on the steering wheel. Unlike the previous model year, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the board. The CX-5 also comes with Mazda Connected Services that includes access to remote vehicle functions via a smartphone app and a subscription-based Wi-Fi and Driver-Assistance FeaturesThe CX-5 earned a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Transportation Administration NHTSA, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick+. It also comes standard with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technology and other optional assists. Later on I'm going to leave work, pick up the kiddo, load up all of our camping gear, and then take the family out to our favorite spot where we might do some off roading before we set up. So, what's the best car for handling all that action? Here at Edmunds, we think it's a compact SUV. They have enough size for trips, enough comfort for passengers, and good fuel economy for longer drives. If you're thinking about one but don't know where to start it's our top 10 best compact SUV rankings. At Edmunds, we have rankings for every car, truck, and SUVs. That we test so head to if you're in the market for any vehicle. Also, hit like and subscribe so you'll be the first to see Edmunds videos when they come out. And go to to get a cash offer on the vehicle in your driveway right now. So, what goes into the Edmunds rankings? First, our test team puts each vehicle through a rigorous workout. They log their capabilities, spaciousness, and efficiency. Then we score them in dozens of categories, add up all the points, and voila. A top 10 ranking. Up first is the Ford Bronco Sport, also known by its other name the 2021- no, not the big Bronco. Think a little smaller, not as tough. Yeah, that one. The Bronco Sport is a compact and boxy SUV with some impressive capability under its belt that makes it great for carving dirt trails or splashing through some mud. Unfortunately, competitors are more comfortable and more spacious. And both its steering and braking just aren't up to par. It's the equivalent of casting big budget stars in your movie and then totally botching the plot. We still like the punchy 2 liter turbo, and there's plenty of personality on board. Just don't expect the real Bronco sized experience. Next, we have the Ford Escape I know what you're thinking they still make the Ford Escape. First of all, yes they do. Rude. And second of all, even though the Bronco Sport and Escape are built on the same platform, the Escape is more refined. Unlike the Bronco Sport, the Escape is comfortable on the road and pretty deft at handling curves. The interior is also nicer place to be because of easy to use controls and plenty of space for passengers, even in the back where the Bronco Sport trips up. Listen, we really don't have many complaints about the Escape other than it's just not that exciting. It's the Almond Joy of SUVs. No one gets mad at it but it's just Almond Joy. How many people do with a Toyota RAV4? Exactly. This has been one of the most popular vehicles, not just SUVs, vehicles in the country for many years. When this version came out in 2019, we drove it across the country and didn't find many weak spots. The RAV4 is a well rounded SUV that you can find for an attractive price. And it isn't going to give you headaches when it comes to space, comfort, or efficiency. Speaking of efficiency, we think the RAV4 Hybrid is actually a better buy if you can swing it. But on the standard RAV4, Toyota even sprinkles a little bit of extra capability with up to inches of ground clearance. Not too shabby for the class at all. Look, it may not be exceptional at any one thing. But for most people, that's OK. Plus, it looks really good when it's dirty. Matter of fact, I should take one of my camping trip right now. Speaking of being exceptional at one thing, let's talk about the Jeep Wrangler shall we? Coming in at number 7 on our list, the Wrangler is one of the most recognizable vehicles you can buy today. Every part, every bolt, every measurement is tailored specifically for off roading. You can climb up hills, you can crunch over obstacles, and you can definitely rock crawl in a Wrangler. And I can't say that about any other SUV on this list. What makes it so capable? Simple, it gives 0 [BEEP] about ride comfort, steering feel, or wind noise. But I'm going to let you in on a little secret. It actually does care about fuel economy. You can get a 2 liter Wrangler, a diesel Wrangler, and even a plug-in hybrid Wrangler. What a time to be alive, right? OK. Now we're starting to put it all together. The Jeep Cherokee, our number six pick, is a smart crossover SUV. Why smart? Because on one hand it's rugged and has pretty serious off road chops. While on the other hand, it also feels good to drive on the road and is sophisticated enough for a night out. First of all, it's a Jeep so you know it can hit a trail no problem. If you get the Trailhawk trim, it's a legit off roader. But for most of you, the important stuff is this comfortable interior, a responsive feeling behind the wheel, and a good combination of technology and upscale materials. This is a crossover with a little attitude. People are constantly asking me for car buying advice. But then they don't always take it. That's a shame because I give great advice. Anyhoo, one of the cars that actually does make their ears perk up is the Subaru Forester. You can always tell when someone is a Forester person from a mile away. They like being different from the norm. They don't mind getting a little dirty. They have anywhere from 1 to 17 dogs. You know, Subaru stuff. The Forester comes with standard all wheel drive. But the thing that a lot of people don't know is the advanced safety system called eyesight is one of the best that we've tested. All my friends with Foresters love them. And I know this for a fact because Subaru owners are contractually obligated to talk your ear off about their Subaru. The redesigned 2022 Hyundai Tucson looks like it could get the kids to school in the morning and great a 100 pound block of parmesan at night. I mean there is a lot going on with this design. But once you open the doors, you'll see why this new SUV has shot to the top of our rankings. The Tucson is extremely well appointed with excellent seats, soft materials all over the place, and an a-plus smooth ride on the road. We like it. We just don't like its engine very much. It took more than 10 seconds for this four cylinder to get the Tucson from 0 to 60 miles an hour. Yikes. But, I have a solution for that. Its hybrid version. It's the quickest hybrid SUV in the class and keeps all of the comfort of the gas version just obviously with better fuel economy. Just keep it away from your cheese. Next up is the Nissan Rogue, which you might be surprised to see here. After all, the Rogue hasn't been one of our highest rated compact SUVs in the past. But something crazy must have happened over at Nissan HQ because we were left impressed with this redesigned 2021 model. It's got a blocky new design, it's actually pretty fun to drive, and the interior on top trim levels is surprisingly plush. The biggest thing however, is that it's supremely easy to use. Nissan designed the Rogue to be your helpful pal and it fills that role nicely. There are all kinds of spacious areas to store your stuff. And the rear cargo area is among the largest in the class. Even better, the divide and hide cargo management system can be configured to keep items in place or create maximum storage space or hide your stuff from outsiders. Nifty thinking, Nissan. Earlier I told you that people only really take my car advice on two vehicles, the Subaru Forester and this one. The Mazda CX-5. Why I mean just look at it when have you ever seen a compact SUV that made you stop and say, dang. It looks sleek, it looks sporty, it looks- I hate this word- but it looks dynamic. And it drives exactly how it looks. CX-5 is really sharp on the road. I mean it's a Mazda, it's what they do. But beyond that the five also has a gorgeous interior. Even on bass levels the styling is just first class. And its highest trim called the signature is legit luxurious. I like it so much I have a 2020 CX-5 at home. Turns out I give pretty good advice. People should listen to me more. Finally, we're up to number one on our list. And if you've ever attended a PTA meeting, this will come as no surprise. It's the Honda CRV. The CRV is a smart choice. Sure, it has powerful engines, quiet ride, and nice seats. And there's great cargo capacity. I mean like exceptional cargo capacity. But most of all, the CRV just doesn't really have weaknesses. It can be the smooth daily commuter, it can be the mountain bike hauler, it can be the winter ski vehicle with an all wheel drive system that pulls you out of the snow when you accidentally drive into a drift. Don't ask me how I know. Most of all, the CRV nails the basics. And adds a lot of value into every trim level on top of that. You may have to pay a little more than some rivals for the privilege. but in our estimation, the CRV experience is worth it. Hey, that was fun. Compact SUV can be fun. You know, these aren't the most exciting vehicles on the road. But with a little imagination there's all kinds of things you can do with them. Whether you decide to go with an Escape or a CX-5 or anything else on this list, it can all carry lots of stuff and keep you and your passengers comfortable on the road for a long time. So if you really want a compact SUV that makes you happy, you should do one thing. Go outside and enjoy it. Don't forget to hit like and subscribe so you'll be the first to see Edmunds videos when they come out. And if you're in the market to sell your car, go to to get a cash offer on the vehicle in your driveway right now. His goal is to help families and first-time shoppers find the right vehicle. Mazda has a reputation for making affordable cars and SUVs that deliver engaging performance and high-quality interiors. The 2023 CX-5 is no exception to this rule. It has arguably the best all-around performance in the compact SUV class and a cabin that is near-luxury in higher trims. Combine these positives with a robust list of standard safety and comfort features and it represents a great value, which is why we named it our 2023 Best Compact SUV for the enjoyed my week driving the 2023 CX-5 Signature, but there are two areas where it came up short. The CX-5’s infotainment system lacks a touch screen and is controlled with a rotary knob. This controller was frustrating and distracting to use throughout my week with the SUV, as apps like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are designed for touch controls. The cargo area is merely adequate and offers less room than most other compact SUVs, including the 2023 Honda CR-V, Ford Bronco Sport and Hyundai the 2023 Mazda CX-5 a Good SUV? Yes, the 2023 CX-5 is a great SUV. In fact, we named it our 2023 Best Compact SUV for the Money because it has the best combination of quality and value in its class. It boasts an upscale interior with comfy first- and second-row seats, lots of standard safety features and a healthy amount of cargo space. It's agile and comfortable to drive, and its two available four-cylinder engines enable peppy acceleration and decent fuel economy. Better still, the CX-5 is a surprisingly good value. Pricing starts at just under $27,000, and that includes all-wheel drive. Drawbacks are few, but it is worth mentioning that the infotainment system lacks touch-screen functionality. This can complicate some otherwise simple adjustments. Should I Buy the 2023 Mazda CX-5? The well-rounded CX-5 deserves to be a top pick if you're shopping for a small SUV. It simply looks and feels like a much pricier vehicle. That said, the compact SUV segment is jam-packed with compelling alternatives that might be a better fit for you, from the practical Toyota RAV4 and outdoorsy Subaru Forester to the all-new Kia Sportage and Mazda CX-50. Both SUVs are similarly sized and priced, they have premium interiors with many of the same tech and safety features, and they even offer the same engine choices. Ultimately, both are great options in this class, but there are some differences to note. The CX-50 offers a touch-screen infotainment system, which the CX-5 lacks, and a higher max towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. On the other hand, the CX-5 has a bit more cargo space and a slightly smoother ride. The CR-V gets superior fuel economy of up to 28/34 mpg city/highway, its interior provides significantly more cargo space, and its touch-screen infotainment system is a bit easier to use. On the other hand, the CR-V is much more expensive than the CX-5 starting at roughly $31,100, its engine tends to drone noisily during passing maneuvers, and it can only tow up to 1,500 pounds 500 less than the CX-5. The right pick for you will likely come down to price or preference. Overall build quality is top-notch as well, and the interior does a great job of keeping road and wind noise at bay. 2023 CX-5 Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation Mazda equips every CX-5 with a infotainment display mounted high on the dashboard, which makes it easy to see while driving, and it largely impresses with crisp graphics and prompt responses. That said, it isn't a touch screen. It's controlled by a knob on the center console, as well as a smaller audio volume knob and a few buttons. The layout works fine for adjusting basic settings, but it's a cumbersome way to navigate through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the plus side, the climate controls are intuitive and conveniently placed in the center stack. Standard infotainment features a screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, HD Radio, a four-speaker stereo and a Wi-Fi hot spot Available infotainment features navigation, satellite radio, six- and 10-speaker stereos, wireless device charging and two additional USB ports Additional standard features an analog gauge cluster, remote keyless entry, push-button start and remote start Other available features a partially digital gauge cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, ambient lighting and a moonroof For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? and What Is Android Auto? 2023 CX-5 Cargo Space The CX-5 has cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and cubic feet with these seats folded. That's a fairly small cargo capacity by compact SUV standards, especially next to spacious rivals like the Subaru Forester and Hyundai Tucson. Even so, there's plenty of room for stowing large and small items alike. A manual liftgate comes standard; a power liftgate is available. How Many People Does the 2023 CX-5 Seat? The CX-5 is a two-row SUV with five seats. Cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats are standard. Available upgrades include leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with power adjustments, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The CX-5's front seats are supportive and nicely contoured, and there's ample headroom and legroom for taller occupants to stretch out. The range of seat and steering wheel adjustments makes it easy to find a comfortable driving position. Outward visibility is great to the front and sides of the SUV, but the rear sightlines are rather slim. The rear seats have sufficient room for adults to sit comfortably on short trips, but on longer outings the second row is best reserved for kids or teens. 2023 CX-5 and Child Car Seats The CX-5 has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for its ease of use. Though the setup is mostly user-friendly, the lower anchors are set too deeply in the seats. A turbocharged version of this engine is available, and it produces up to 256 horsepower on premium gasoline and 227 horsepower on regular gas. The standard engine is perfectly fine for everyday driving. It hustles the CX-5 off the line and around town with respectable verve, and this muscle is maximized by the prompt-yet-smooth shifts of the six-speed automatic. That said, the engine starts to feel out of breath when passing other vehicles on the highway. Zero to 60 mph takes about seconds. The turbocharged engine largely fixes that issue. It's noticeably punchier, both in town and on the highway, and its deeper well of torque makes for snappy passing maneuvers. It also trims the zero-to-60 sprint to just seconds. 2023 CX-5 Gas Mileage The 2023 CX-5 gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, which is average fuel economy for a compact SUV. Models equipped with the turbo engine are rated at 22/27 mpg city/highway. Thriftier alternatives include the Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4. 2023 CX-5 Ride and Handling The CX-5 feels like a much pricier SUV from behind the wheel. Its taut suspension does a nice job of soaking up bumps and dips in the road, resulting in a firm but comfortable ride, and it keeps body lean to a minimum around turns. The steering is quick and nicely weighted, and the brakes slow the SUV confidently. Overall, the CX-5 exhibits a great blend of comfort and sportiness, and it remains one of the best-driving SUVs in this class. 2023 CX-5 Towing Capacity The CX-5 can tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped. That's an average tow rating for the segment. Read more about performance » CX-5 Reliability Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 Reliable? The 2023 Mazda CX-5 has a predicted reliability score of 82 out of 100.
